How to Prepare for Rise of Iron - Destiny

With Destiny's next big expansion just over the horizon, it's time to start preparing your Guardian for Year 3. Here's some quick and easy tips on how to make sure you're ready for any challenges along the way.

1. Fill Your Vault with Legendary Weapons and Armor

Starting now, if your vault is not completely filled with either legendary or exotic weapons, save every drop you get. It doesn't matter if it's the fifteenth Crucible helmet you've received, put it in your vault. This will allow you a free and easy way to essentially increase the maximum number of legendary marks you can accrue.  If you play for about 2 hours a night for the next week you should get, on average, 4 legendary weapons or armor pieces.  This translates directly into over 80 legendary marks, netting you a new, vendor armor piece or weapon when combine with the day one daily rewards. Start saving now and you'll be all the happier on September 20th.

2. Edge Your Reputation!

Edging your reputation means to play crucible and vanguard up until the point that they're about to level up and then stopping.  This allows you to immediately cash in on release in order to get some sweet gear for Rise of Iron. With the changes to how faction packages will work (i.e. being able to select whether you want a weapon or armor piece out of a package), this will hugely benefit your onward path towards the maximum light level at launch (385).  Don't forget to use the test weapons this week in order to increase your Gunsmith reputation just enough so that you can rank up in the first week of RoI.

3. Don't Use Your Exotic Engrams Immediately!

I know better than most that the temptation of acquiring the new exotics as fast as possible is almost unbearable but it's in your best interest not to use any stored Exotic engrams you may have immediately. If you want to run the Raid in the first weekend or compete in the inaugural Iron Banner, save your engrams until you've plateaued your Light level after the initial story and quests. Once you've naturally completed the story and quests, you will have already increased you Light level significantly. At this point, pop your engrams to give yourself a free boost in Light. While this remains unconfirmed, the evidence from the way that Exotic boot engrams have been decrypting suggest that stored exotics will decrypt at a higher level than you currently are.

4. Be Conservative with Marks... But Buy What you Want Now

If you haven't bought the current vendor role of Hawksaw yet, do it now.  Remember over the week before RoI, you will accrue 210 Legendary Marks naturally but simply doing the Daily Crucible and Story missions. That's not even counting the heroic strikes and the weekly Crucible playlist which is potentially another 60.  So, while you need to be mindful that you have 200 stocked on September 20th, you also shouldn't pass up on some of the standout vendor rolls out there now.  Here's a list of weapons I recommend for each archetype: Pulse Rifles: Hawksaw (Crucible), Apple of Discord (Vanguard); Auto Rifles: Righteous VII (New Monarchy), Paleocontact (Dead Orbit); Hand Cannons: None :(; Scout Rifles: Last Extremity (Crucible); Fusion Rifles: The Vacancy (Future War Cult), Panta Rhei (Crucible); Shotguns: None :(; Sniper Rifle: 1000-Yard Stare (Vanguard); Sidearms: Conviction II (New Monarchy); Rockets: None :(; Machine Guns: Objection IV (New Monarchy).

5. Save Completed Bounties

During the last couple of days before RoI, save completed bounties that net you the most experience. This will help you not only rank up your factions but also level up any of that day one vendor gear you purchase. Check your bounties for the ones that give you the most XP.  Generally there will be at least 4 that give you 3000+ XP such as the Patrol Vanguard Bounties. Balancing this usage with your faction reputation edging can be tricky so once you've hit the sweet spot, it's okay to simply stop playing on that character.

6. Know Your Raid Team

Set up a designated raid team before the launch of RoI. If someone can't make it day one, it's much easier to find someone else than it is to tell someone ahead of time that they can raid with you before realizing that they're the seventh pick.  Know your team in advance and prepare together. If something comes up, there are a bunch of ways to find someone to fill out your team such as the LFG forums or other designated sites.

That's all I got folks.  These are the things I will be doing before Rise of Iron drops and I hope that some of them will help you out along the way.  And remember, this is a game about shooting aliens in the face so don't get too wrapped up in the numbers or the salt.  Have fun and enjoy it! Happy hunting Guardians!
